Ayesha Zubair- a Radiologist - Interview

Q. What do you do?

A. I'm a Radiologist. I'm keen to help people out of there miserable disorders. My part of the job is to detect and identify the diseases that cannot be recognized normally.

Q. What makes you a woman of strength?

A. The barriers that I have faced to become what I am today. And the obstacles that come in my way to diagnose my patient.

Q. How did you get here and how long have you been in this profession?

A. I was born in a middle-class family. I lived in Gujranwala. My father was not rich but he worked hard to bring his family from poverty to a better condition. I am the eldest in my family. I always wanted to become a doctor. With my goal of becoming a doctor, I started my journey and never lost faith in my dreams. I completed my matric in 2010, at the age of 15.

After matric, I took admission in FSc Pre Medical in a well-known college. My father somehow managed to support my studies there. It was quite expansive. My father spent all his savings to fulfill my goal. I secured marks with good percentage in Pre Medical. Then I appeared in the entrance test of different universities. I worked hard to secure good marks in the entrance test. But unfortunately, my marks were not enough to get admission in any government university. Private universities were quite expensive and were not affordable for me. So I appeared again in the entrance test after a year. This time I worked even harder to get my goal and luckily I managed to get admission in one of best the universities in Lahore.

I was just 18 years old when I attended my first lecture at the university. I had faced many hurdles to get here. My family couldn't support the expenses of my education but they still didn't give up. Life in a big city was not as easy as expected. I was excited as well as scared. I had no idea about that place. I never expected that I will get a chance to study in this kind of university.

As days passed, life here became more complicated. People were not good and some were selfish too. A new competitive race began among the students. Everyone wanted to leave others behind.

I shared a room of girls' hostel with other girls to manage my room's rent. I faced many difficulties there. You cannot study in noise and when the lights are out. I had to compromise everything for my goal. My father supported me a lot. He always took care of me. And after 5 years of continued study and struggle, I finally succeeded to get my goal. I became a doctor. I became a radiologist. I served as a radiologist in Shaikh Zaid Hospital in Lahore. Then I came back to my city and decided to serve my people in Gujranwala. Now I am serving in Chaudhary Hospital and Central Hospital in Gujranwala and doing a research on cancer patients.

Q. What has been your ambition and what do you most love about your work?

A. My ambition is to serve the poor who cannot afford the expenses of their treatment. I want to help my nation and do something good for my country.

Q. What do you think is your biggest achievement throughout your professional journey?

A. Becoming a doctor to help those who cannot support their treatment financially and making my parents proud is my biggest achievement throughout my professional journey.

Q. What are your current projects and what do plan on doing in the near future?

A. I am doing research on cancer patients nowadays to find a better diagnostic procedure for cancer patients. And after completing my research I have decided to continue my study in the relevant field.

Q. A word of advice from your experience for women who wish to pursue a career path.

A. Determination is the key that will lead you to your goals in this era. Many hurdles will come in your way and people will try to stop you, but you have to keep going forward and never give up on your goals. Also, guide and enlighten the path for others.
